Since 1990, Maryknoll has supported efforts to make known the human rights violations committed or engineered by graduates of the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA). Among these are the assassination of two Maryknoll sisters, Maura Clarke, MM and Ita Ford, MM, who, with companions Dorothy Kazel, OSU and Jean Donovan, were brutally killed in December 1980. SOA graduates are implicated in many other high profile killings in Latin America, as well as in a long and sordid list of human rights violations.
With SOA Watch, founded by Maryknoll Father Roy Bourgeois, we work for the closure of the school, now called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC).
