Jubilee USA: What’s on your heart

January 2008

From our colleagues at the Jubilee USA Network:

Last month, President-elect Obama selected Timothy Geithner as the next U.S. Treasury Secretary.

Secretary-designate Geithner has huge job ahead of him. He’ll need to address the growing economic crisis facing the United States. At the same time, he will be responsible for setting U.S. international financial policy and alleviating the impact of the financial crisis on the most impoverished countries in the world.

In tough times, the temptation is to turn our focus inward, ignoring the plight of suffering people around the world with devastating results. We must not let this happen.

That’s why we’re asking you to participate in the What’s on Your Heart campaign. In this new campaign we will welcome new Treasury Secretary Geithner to his position by telling him what’s on our hearts in these difficult times.

There are three easy ways you, your community, or your congregation can urge Secretary-designate Geithner to make issues of global poverty and economic justice a priority:

  • Adapt and send a message through our easy online form.
  • Order special postcards for you and your community to sign and send
  • or ... Do it yourself! Just make a heart out of paper and write down what’s on your heart - just a phrase is fine (for example “debt cancellation for Haiti” or “stop vulture funds”) Click here for more suggestions. Then sign the heart with your name and contact information and send it to Jubilee USA Network, 212 E. Capitol Street, N.E., Washington, D.C. 20003.

Jubilee will deliver all of your hearts, postcards and messages to the new Treasury Secretary soon after the inauguration on January 20 and before Valentine’s Day. The deadline to tell us what’s on your heart is February 9, 2009.

Thank you for taking action in support of debt cancellation, economic justice and abundant life for all!
