The lived experience of Maryknoll missioners around the world shows us that much suffering is being caused, or at least exacerbated, by an economic model which sees profits as its bottom line. Maryknoll strives to denounce this unjust model while also announcing new alternatives to help create a world in which all can participate and live dignified lives.
Many of our missioners are involved in helping to create viable alternatives for people who are currently excluded from the economy, through cooperatives, workers’ associations and micro credit programs.
One of the central problems of the current economic system is that people whose lives are being affected by decisions (stakeholders) have no say in those decisions. Economic alternatives work to guarantee that all stakeholders take part in the decision-making process.
