“Short-takes on a shrinking world” video invitational

Tell the next U.S. president how to shape foreign policy!

As part of our 2008 election project, high school and college-aged youth are invited to submit videos or PowerPoint presentations that highlight issues of importance in the next president’s foreign policy agenda.

Participants may submit one 60-90 second video or PowerPoint presentation addressed to the next president of the United States and/or new members of the 111th Congress incorporating advice on how to shape foreign policy around one of the election project’s five themes:

1)    climate change

2)    global economy

3)    migration/immigration

4)    HIV/AIDS

5)    peace and sustainable security

Research on these areas should primarily be done on the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns website or on any of the websites linked to this site.

The work may be created collaboratively but must be original.

Appropriate permissions, copyrights and citations must be provided for any non-original material used including external footage, music, quotes and images borrowed from other sources.

Entries will be accepted from August 15 until November 27, Thanksgiving Day.

Videos and PowerPoint presentations will be reviewed by the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns’ staff to determine appropriateness of content and message. Those that meet the following criteria will be posted on the website and made available for educational purposes.

  • Present the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns perspective on each critical policy issue addressed. (See www.maryknollogc.org for guidance on our perspective.)
  • Present the material in a thoughtful and engaged way. Animated films are acceptable.
  • Use creative and appealing audio-visual techniques.
  • Be appropriate for audiences of all ages.
  • Send a message to elected officials that you care about U.S. foreign policy and want to see important changes to ensure the global common good.
  • Emphasize that citizens are interested in what elected officials do and intend to hold them accountable to keep their campaign promises through letter writing, visiting state and local elected officials and attracting media attention to foreign policy issues.

For information on how to submit entries for “Short-takes on a shrinking world,” email the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns or call 202-832-1780.
